He was the spiritual guide of his community and he worked for the cultural revival of the Mayan people. On the last 25th of august he was murdered and the crime has not yet been clarified. His death is the latest in a series of murders among the cultural group he founded, called Sotz’il Jay.For this event, several Aboriginal artists will be present, including Danny Bacon who is a singer-songwriter originally from Mani-Utenam and Pessamit. Since a few years, his songs in Innu language are being heard through the radio networks of SOCAM and performing in many communities. He recently became well known through his collaboration with the band Supay, with who he is proposing an Andean-Innu musical fusion, a special «Bacon from the Andes»! For this evening he will sing and he will be accompanied by Julian Blacksmith, cree guitar player.
Also, Iqi Balam and his Banda de Gaza will be giving a performance during this tribute. Iqui is a mayan artist singing a committed music since many years in Quebec. You can learn more about him with the following link: http://www.myspace.com/labandadegaza
